Zabaleta won by converting his fourth match point in the final tiebreaker.
"It's simply wonderful. I played great tennis today and ousting the tournament top seed is just fantastic," Zabaleta said.
In the second set, Zabaleta lead 40-0 in the ninth game and was broken, but he broke back to 5-5 in the next game as Davydenko committed three unforced errors.
"I am very disappointed. I wanted to get very far here, but Mariano was too strong today," Davydenko said.
Also, Fernando Verdasco of Spain defeated eight-seeded Olivier Rochus of Belgium 7-5, 6-3 and Robin Vik of the Czech Republic beat 16th-seeded Paul-Henri Mathieu when the Frenchman retired while trailing 7-5, 1-0.

Mariano Zabaleta of Argentina sent top seed Nikolay Davydenko crashing out of the Generali Open on Wednesday.
The Argentine converted his fourth match point to come through 6-4 7-6 (7-5) and reach the third round.
"It's simply wonderful," he said. "I played great today and ousting the tournament top seed is just fantastic."
Third seed Gaston Gaudio beat Philipp Kohlschreiber 7-5 6-3, but fellow seeds Olivier Rochus and Paul-Henri Mathieu made early exits.
Fernando Verdasco beat eighth seed Rochus of Belgium 7-5 6-3, and Robin Vik beat 16th seed Mathieu when the Frenchman retired when trailing 7-5 1-0.
