Zabaleta won by converting his fourth match point in the final tiebreaker.
"It's simply wonderful. I played great tennis today and ousting the tournament top seed is just fantastic," Zabaleta said.
In the second set, Zabaleta lead 40-0 in the ninth game and was broken, but he broke back to 5-5 in the next game as Davydenko committed three unforced errors.
"I am very disappointed. I wanted to get very far here, but Mariano was too strong today," Davydenko said.
Also, Fernando Verdasco of Spain defeated eight-seeded Olivier Rochus of Belgium 7-5, 6-3 and Robin Vik of the Czech Republic beat 16th-seeded Paul-Henri Mathieu when the Frenchman retired while trailing 7-5, 1-0.
